Academic Semester Planning Guide
The start of any semester can be a bit overwhelming with a new schedule, classes, professors, and students pulling you in all sorts of different directions. To help keep you focused and organized, use this week-by-week guide throughout the term. For each week, we have tips and useful links to assist you in maintaining balance.
- Collect Syllabi. Make notes and plan for exam/assignment dates.
- Review Academic Calendar and add important dates to semester planner.
- Set academic and engagement goals for the term. Think about your term GPA goal and consider what student organizations/events you want to prioritize.
- Make a plan to attend the UConn Involvement Fair to explore new opportunities and meet with clubs you're interested in joining.
- UConntact is a great resource for browsing the hundreds of available student orgs on campus.
- Review academic strategies like Active Reading and Listening and the Pomodoro Technique.

- Last opportunity to make changes to your schedule in StudentAdmin before the Add/Drop period ends (See countdown above this planning guide!)
- Establish a strong system to check UConn email daily. Your UConn email is the primary way professors and advisors will communicate with you. You'll be getting a lot of email at the start of the term. Keep organized right from the beginning so you don't miss any important messages.

- Advising: Watch for an email from your advisor about required meetings to complete your advising requirement for the term. Visit Drop-In Advising Hours with questions.
- Remember, for the first two year, you have semesterly advising requirements to complete. Prior to the start of registration for the term, you will have an enrollment hold placed on your account that can only be remvoed by completing these advising requirements. This hold will prevent you from registering for the next semester regardless of your enrollment appointment ("pick time"), so take action on your advising requirements ASAP to avoid delays in registration!
- Evaluate your study strategy and goals.
- It is important to routinely monitor your progress and make note of what is working versus what is not and make the necessary changes to your habits.
- By the fourth week of the term, you should have complete multiple assessments in each class. How were your grades in those assessments? What study strategies (good or bad) contributed to those grades? What should you keep? What should you change?
- Use the GPA calculator in Nexus to monitor term performance and prioritize classes that need more attention.
- Advising: Visit Drop-In Advising Hours with questions not answered during your required advising meetings. You will not be able to schedule an additional advising appointment with your assigned advisor, so use drop-ins for all your on-demand advising needs.
- Prepare for a complete Midterm assessments.
- As you approach this point in the semester, be sure to evaluate where you are in each course. If you're struggling in a course, come to Drop-In Advising Hours and speak with an Academic Advisor about your options before the Withdrawal and Pass/Fail deadline (Monday of Week 12). Withdraw and Pass/Fail are tools to help you protect your GPA. Use them if you need them!
- Review and make a plan for your Final Exam schedule. Check the syllabi for each of your classes for final exam details, because finals week will be different than your typical weekly schedule.

- Registration for next term begins for all current UConn students.
- Check your enrollment appointment (aka "pick time") in StudentAdmin.
- Make sure all holds on your account are resolved before your pick time!

- Keep in mind a drop-in meeting cannot satisfy your required advising appointments for the term. You must schedule those with your advisor and peer mentor according to the instructions you received via email in Week 3.
- Withdrawal and Pass/Fail Deadline

- Last couple weeks of classes before final exams
- Prioritize your time as we close the term and take advantage of available resources.
- Create a study plan for your final exams to keep organized and ensure you allocate enough time to adequately prepare for each final assessment. Some classes will need more attention than others depending on how much material is being assessed in the final and how well you have been doing throughout the term.
- If you haven't already done so, check the syllabi for each of your classes for final exam details. Days and times for your final exams will be different than your typical weekly class schedule.
- Consult your syllabi to determine what grade you will need in the final assessment to earn the final grade you want in the class.
- Use the Nexus GPA calculator to help estimate your term and cumulative GPA and identify which courses need to be top priority.

- Final Exams
- Stick to your study plan. You got this!
- Remember to take breaks while studying!
- Maintain a healthy eating and sleep schedule. You brain consolidates new information into long term memory when you sleep. If you do not have restful sleep as a part of your study schedule, all your cramming will be a complete waste of time and effort.
